The box made of pallets that becomes a garden

The package created in collaboration with Palm s.p.a ‘s Palm Design division is the fruit of thirty years of labor by the Barzoni family and their recent encounter with Salcheto.

Their silent and peaceful struggle has always sought to enhance respect for the environment and of the tree as a producer of life and relational goods. The strength of their idealism led them to consider the possibility of placing at the center of this struggle a symbol of modern industry, the wood pallet.


The pallet is a humble object, and just as the donkey was at one time, it is essential to the mobility of all goods. In today’s consumer society pallets are numerous (it is estimated that in Italy there are 4 pallets for every person), and may be exploited in a manner harmful to the environment and the people who produce the pallets, precisely because of its invisibility to the public. Normal daily consumption, however, is indirectly responsible for an annual production of nearly one pallet per person, where 80% of the timber comes from countries other than Italy, and an estimated half of it is illegally logged. Considering that deforestation is the second leading cause of CO2 emissions on earth, and that a cancer of our ultra-modern society is the loss of value of human labor (both manual and intellectual), which is overtaken by economic logic that is out of control and otherwise unbalanced, such projects, as the one undertaken by Palm, illustrate an awareness of an organization that can build a future by proposing a different economical approach.

Starting with the Social Cooperative Work & Project aiming to welcome and integrate people from different ethnicities and social diversities, to the development of the Palm Design division, willing to offer an opportunity to young talents in the field of environmental research and development, the Barzoni family wishes to draw attention to a pallet made of controlled raw materials sustainably managed forests and FSC or PEFC certified. This pallet is produced with a focus on energy consumption, seeking a fair price for the honest and serious work involved, whilst it is developing an industry to collect and reuse those materials and energies. This same material will allow the same craftsman to manufacture objects and furniture expressing the same history and values, also with the intent of educating the consumer to make more responsible purchases based on more informative and transparent labels expressing the social contents of the product, empowering the consumer to be an active part of the supply chain.

The encounter with Salcheto and Palm’s experience with the Ortopallet® created a package that synthesizes and enhances the above values in a virtuous lifecycle:

// the wood comes from FSC and PEFC certified forests and becomes a pallet
// the pallet is retrieved once used by industry
// the retrieved pallet becomes a box for wine that goes into consumers' homes
// the box becomes a home garden of rosemary and sage for cooking

We asked all who work and are associated with Salcheto to express a thought devoted to the company, its wines, its history and the future we are building which have been written on Salco 2005 bottles.
